Prof. Umar Pate, Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Kashere in Gombe Sate said that the university has been given licence by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to commence radio broadcast in January.
Pate said this at a three-day Capacity Building Work Shop for journalists in the North East in Maiduguri on Thursday.
The workshop was organised by the North East Development Commission (NEDC)
He said that the university has acquired state of the art digital equipment for the broadcast.
According to him the approval is granted for the takeoff of 89.1FM station in Gombe.
He said that the station would cover the entire Gombe state and some neighbouring states.
“I am happy to announce to you that the Federal university Kashere has been granted the licence to commence broadcast activities,“he said.
He said that the National Universities Commission has unbundled the Mass Communication Departments in universities into seven new departments.
The departments include, public relations, journalism, advertisement, strategic communications, broadcasting amongst many others.
He said that the new curriculum would provide specific specialisations in the modern journalism.
Pate expressed optimism that the development would improve the media practice and is online with global best practices.
“If we continue to teach our students the same way we were taught in the past, our graduates would be able to stand the test of time.
