Jamil Ismail Mabai, a Katsina-born freelance multimedia journalist and publisher of Click magazine, has been nominated for Gatefield’s People Journalism Prize for Africa 2021 Nominees.
Mabai, who was the first indigenous journalist from Katsina and northern Nigeria to be nominated, is, however, nominated as one of the frontline field journalists who fearlessly uncovered and exposed hidden stories in the northwest region that has been hit badly by banditry and underdevelopment.
However, the Garfield-backed People Journalism Prize for Africa (PJPA) is a public service journalism initiative to recognize and reward journalists, citizen reporters, and social justice Newsmakers on the continent.

Although this is the 3rd year, PJPA recognizes journalists, human rights defenders, and public opinion shapers, among others, in Africa for their selfless services in their various fields of profession.
According to PJPA, Jamil is a freelance journalist whose stories have uncovered Nigeria’s North-Western region atrocities at significant personal risk.
Other nominees from Nigeria include Laila Johnson Salami, Samuel Ogundipe, Sandra Ezekwesili, and Irene David-Arinze, while Daneel Knoetze/View Finder (South Africa), Naipanoi Lepapa (Kenya), Manasseh Azure Awuni (Ghana), Lucy Kassa (Ethiopia), and Elizabeth Merab (Kenya)
The winners of Gatefield’s People Journalism Prize for Africa are expected to be given the sum of $1,500 in cash, totaling $3,000 in financial rewards to the winning journalists.
