The Kebbi retirees pressure group Alhaji Babangida Garba Gwandu had on Friday urged the governor of Kebbi State, Senator Atiku Bagudu, to implement the upward pension review that President Muhammadu Buhari approved since 1999 to Kebbi pensioners.
Speaking in Birnin Kebbi, Gwandu described it as unfortunate some pensioners in Kebbi still receiving 1,800 as monthly pension and several others receive 2000.
He said many retirees died while waiting for their gratuities, and those who are still alive their children hawk on the street to provide for their sick and old retired fathers.
Speaking further, the pressure group leader accused security agencies of conniving with the government to half their meeting, which they slated for Thursday 24th June 2021 after they formerly wrote to all concerned authorities, including the army in the state.
He lamented some elements told the police that they intend to protest with a placard which he said is laughable.
“How can weak retired civil servants of sixty to seventy years hold placard when he can barely stand for less than an hour? Therefore, the government must take heed to act fast as the situations of retirees are deteriorating”, he said.
He urged Bagudu to wade in to salvage the situation to save more lives of retirees by paying gratuities and upward review pensions.
He called on his members to remain calm and peaceful as they will continue to engage the government through dialogue and other lawful means.
