Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum.

Makinde took over as chairman just minutes after the former chairman, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, resigned on Thursday.

The oyo state governor emerged as the new chairman at the ongoing PDP National Executive Council Board meeting in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The PDP National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, received a vote of confidence from the NEC, putting an end to some disgruntled party members’ calls for his (Ayu’s) resignation.

The meeting was attended by 397 members of the NEC, including past national chairmen of the party, the country’s immediate past Vice President, Namadi Sambo, and the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, among others.

The meeting’s 397 NEC members voted unanimously in favor of Ayu’s continuation as party chairman.

Walid Jibrin, the Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees, resigned from his position.

He said the decision was made to ensure the party’s presidential candidate emerged victorious in the 2023 elections.

Jibrin stated that if Atiku wins the presidential election next year, he is confident he will be considered for a higher position.

“I made this decision based on what I said in the past,” he explained. I stated that all we want to ensure is that Atiku Abubakar becomes President by any means necessary, which is why I sincerely decided to resign from the BoT. I discussed it with the candidate, and he agreed. I am sure if the party wins, I will be given a bigger position.”

However, Adolphus Wabara, a former Senate President, was named acting Chairman of the BoT just minutes after his resignation.

Wabara, who was previously the Secretary of the PDP BoT, would be appointed to the PDP’s presidential campaign council.
