The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s Maiduguri Zonal Command, along with Tahiru Alhaji, Saidu Daura, and Prince Lawal Shoyode, has secured the conviction and sentencing of Aisha Alkali Wakil (a.k.a Mama Boko Haram).

On Thursday, September 29, 2022, Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court sentenced them to seven years in prison each for conspiracy and another seven years for obtaining money by false pretences.

Before their conviction, the defendants were first arraigned before Justice Kumaliya on September 14, 2020, on two count charges of conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretence totaling N 15,000,000.00. (Fifteen Million Naira).

“That you, Aisha Alkali Wakil, Tahiru Alhaji Saidu Daura, Prince Lawal Shoyode, while being Chief Executive Officer, Program Manager, and Country Director respectively of Complete Care and Aid Foundation (Non-Governmental Organization) and SAIDU MUKTAR (at large) obtained the sum of N15,000,000.00 (Fifteen Million Naira) with intent to defraud sometime in November 2018 at Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this

The defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges, prompting prosecution counsel, Mukhtar Ali Ahmed, to call six witnesses and present several documents as exhibits before the court before closing his case on October 27, 2020.

In his decision, Justice Kumaliya found the defendants guilty on all two counts of charges and sentenced them to seven years in prison without the option of a fine for conspiracy.

The judge sentenced them to an additional seven years in prison without the option of a fine for the offense of obtaining money by deception.

He ordered the convicts to jointly restitute N15,000.000.00 (Fifteen Million Naira) to their victim, failing which they will serve an additional five years in prison.

The convicts arrived at the Correctional Centers after obtaining N15 million from a petitioner under the guise of providing solar energy for his use. They neither provided the service nor returned his money. Justice Kumaliya had previously convicted and sentenced “‘Mama Boko Haram” to five years in prison on two counts of conspiracy and obtaining over N71 million by deception. On June 15, 2022, she was sentenced to prison.
