The Adamawa State Police Command has confirmed the admission of 30-year-old Abdullahi Mohammed to the Yola Psychiatric Hospital after a dramatic incident in Mayo-Belwa, where he climbed a 33kV high-tension electricity pole.
According to the police, Mohammed’s unusual act was tied to a demand for the resignation of President Bola Tinubu.

The incident, which occurred last Friday morning along the Yola-Jalingo highway, left many onlookers in shock as Mohammed insisted that he would not descend from the pole unless President Tinubu stepped down. The standoff persisted throughout the day, until the police, with the assistance of local residents, successfully convinced him to come down on Saturday night.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje, revealed that upon rescuing Mohammed, the police found hard drugs in his possession, including Indian hemp. “When the police from the Mayo-Belwa division rescued Abdullahi Mohammed, some hard drugs were discovered on him, including green leaves, which he confessed were Indian hemp,” Nguroje said.
Nguroje further explained that Mohammed is undergoing psychiatric evaluation at a facility within the Yola Specialist Hospital, adding that his actions would have legal consequences.
“Attempting to kill himself is a criminal offence under our Constitution, so we are going to charge him to court. It is the constitutional duty of the police to protect lives and property, and when an individual wants to take his life, such would be made to face the full wrath of the law.”
The incident unfolded during Mayo-Belwa’s market day, heightening the tension in the area. Despite initial challenges in rescuing Mohammed, police efforts, bolstered by community support, eventually brought the situation to a safe conclusion.
