A 33-year-old man, Abiodun Thomas, on Tuesday appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly stealing armoured cable from a transformer valued at N250,000.

The police charged the defendant, of no fixed address, with stealing and willful damage.

The prosecutor, Insp E.O. Adaraloye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Dec. 10, 2021 at about 12.30 a.m., at Irewunmi Community Development Association (CDA), Ikosi, Iyana-Iyesi, Ota.

Adaraloye said that the defendant stole armoured cable from a transformer valued at N250, 000 belonging to the Irewunmi CDA, Ikosi.

He also said the defendant willfully damaged the transformer.

The prosecutor said the defendant was apprehended by the vigilance group and handed over to the police.

He said that the offences contravened sections 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate A.O. Adeyemi granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adeyemi ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government.

The case was adjourned until April 21, for further hearing. (NAN)
