Nasarawa State government arrested 28 commercial motorcyclists on Saturday in Lafia for violating the state’s Environmental Sanitation Laws.

Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed, Chief Environmental Officer at the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources told newsmen in Lafia that the motorcyclists were arrested while conducting business during the sanitation exercise.

“We went on house-to-house and street-to-street sanitation enforcement and what we discovered was that residents, shop owners and motorists complied with the law.

“However, some commercial motorcyclists were found moving from place to place, conveying passengers and we arrested 28 of them and they have been charged at our mobile court.

“We had earlier informed leaders of the commercial motorcyclists associations to talk to their members to adhere to the environmental laws, but those arrested still violated the laws.

“If they continue, we will ban the use of commercial motorcycles in Lafia and the state at large,’’ he said.

He assured that the ministry would continue to enforce the law for the benefit of the people.

Mohammed explained that the sanitation exercise held regularly on the last Saturday of the month was brought forward because the last Saturday of December happened to be Christmas Eve.
