The construction firm in charge of renovating the National Assembly, Visible Construction Limited, has revealed that the roof of the complex continues to leak due to ongoing repair works. Despite efforts to address the issue, the leaky roof remains a concern.
Last year, the National Assembly lobby experienced flooding caused by the leaky roof of the White House, which houses the chambers.
This incident sparked public outrage and was considered a national embarrassment.
Lawmakers in the 9th National Assembly had previously emphasized the urgent need for renovation due to the deterioration of the building.
Consequently, a budget of N30 billion was allocated to the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) for comprehensive renovation in the 2021 fiscal year.
Visible Construction Limited, the contracted construction company, began renovation work in April 2022.
However, one year later, the roof of the National Assembly’s White House continues to leak, raising concerns about the overall condition of the building despite the substantial investment in its renovation.
Addressing the issue, Project Engineer Tajudeen Olanipekun stated that specialized chemicals for the affected expansion joints would soon be applied, resulting in a cessation of the roof leakage.
He assured that all the roofs in the complex had been thoroughly inspected for any expansion joints requiring water-tight chemicals to prevent further leaks.
Olanipekun expressed confidence that the renovation work would address the roof leakage problem and stated, “There should be no cause for alarm from any quarters as regards the project since engineers from FCDA are also with us.”
