The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, has expressed his disappointment over the conflicting orders issued by the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court regarding the tussle for the stool of the Emir of Kano.

In a statement, Maikyau described the conduct of the counsel and the courts as an “utter disgrace” and a “shame” to the legal profession, which has brought public ridicule.

He observed that these actions have inflicted severe damage on the legal profession, damage that will take a long time to repair and rebuild.

The NBA President demanded that the heads of court take swift action to probe the judges’ conduct, ascertain whether there has been any judicial misconduct or abuse of power, and report their findings to the National Judicial Council for necessary disciplinary measures.

According to him, “The NBA, on the other hand, will investigate the conduct of the counsel involved in these cases and shall not hesitate to commence disciplinary action against them before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee, should there be any finding of alleged professional misconduct against them.”

The NBA President emphasized the need to protect the integrity, welfare, and independence of the Bar and the judiciary, stressing that the institution of the judiciary must be guarded jealously by all, as the existence, growth, and development of any nation are connected with the dispensation of justice, which is the primary responsibility of the judiciary.
