The Gombe Command of the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it has seized 408.655kg of various illicit drugs and arrested 150 suspects from July 2020 to date.

Mrs Ekaete Egwunwoke, Gombe Commander of NDLEA, disclosed on Friday while briefing journalists on the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

According to her, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is annually celebrated worldwide on June 26.

It is aimed at creating awareness of the dangers of substance and drug abuse.

Egwunwoke said that from July 2020 to date, about 70 clients had been counselled and rehabilitated while the command secured a total of 31 convictions.

The commander said that the command had taken awareness campaign to places, including schools and other relevant places.

She said that the establishment of the Gombe State Drug Control Committee was commendable because it would go a long way in reducing drug abuse.

“It is important to remind the general public that NDLEA has a treatment and care centre in Gombe, but the facility is grossly underutilised.

“ I, therefore, call upon the state government and the good people of Gombe as well as Civil Society Organisations to ensure that the facility is adequately put into use,” she said

Egwunwoke urged the public to expose drug dealers in their environment.

She further called on parents and guardians to monitor the movement of their children and wards.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2021 International Day Against Drug Abuse theme is “Share Facts about Drugs, Save  Lives.”
