1. Tale of woes as NEMA receives additional 175 Nigerian returnees from Libya
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said on Thursday that it had received another 175 Nigerian returnees from Libya through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMA), Lagos.
The returnees are 92 male adults, 53 female adults, six male children, 12 female children nine male infants and three female infants.
Acting Coordinator of NEMA’s Lagos Territorial Office, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that they arrived at the airport at about 9.48 p.m. on Wednesday.
One of the returnees, Azizat Omoniyi, 21, from Lagos State who abandoned her education when she was 17 years old, expressed regret at her misbehaviour, especially for wasting her father’s hard-earned money.
2. 5, 000 youths to gain jobs from Niger-Benue inland waterway port project
The Nigerian Navy, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and Nigeian Export and import (NEXIM) Bank, have begun the survey and charting for the lower River Niger and River Benue for enhanced waterway port to stimulate socio-commercial activities in the country.
The project will open up the country’s inland waterways to 25 African countries and Europe in transportation and trade connectivity, Mrs Dabney Shell-Holma, Chairperson, Sealinks Consortium, one of the handlers of the project, said on Wednesday in Lokoja.
According to her, the project, covering 932,000 square kilometres, will provide jobs for more than 5,000 Nigerian yourths.
3. Borno Govt. provides 6,000 bicycles for students in rural areas
Borno Government has provided 6,000 free bicycles for some day school students in rural areas, to encourage them to be punctual in school.
The State’s Commissioner for Education, Mr Abba Wakilbe disclosed this on Wednesday while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of Government Technical Secondary School, Wuyo in Bayo LGA.
Wakilbe said the inaugurated school was given 300 of the bicycles for students from neighbouring villages attending the school.
4. INEC Chairman says elections in Nigeria tough task, urges media support
Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday said that conducting elections in Nigeria was a tough task, urging media support against fake news that could cause confusion.
Yakubu spoke at a Strategic Interactive Meeting with Online Publishers organised by INEC in collaboration with the Institute for Media and Society and the International Press Centre, and held in Lagos.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the theme of the meeting was “Strengthening INEC/Media Partnership for the Consolidation of Free, Fair, Credible and Inclusive Elections”.
According to him, Nigeria’s size and population make it one of the biggest democracies in the world and the largest presidential democracy after the United States of America.
5. NYSC: Corps members groan over biting economy, say ‘allowee’ now useless
Members of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, in the Federal Capital Territory have lamented the difficulty associated with serving in Abuja, saying the high cost of living in the nation’s capital is beyond their monthly stipends.
This is coming as prices of food items and other essential commodities continue to skyrocket in the FCT while the entire nation battles an economic crisis that has relatively made life difficult for commoners.
6. Obiano ready to answer EFCC’s questions – Anambra govt reacts as Commission places gov on watchlist
Anambra State government has said that Governor Willie Obiano was ready to answer questions about his tenure in office, and that the governor who is currently in the United States did not leave the country in disguise.
This was in reaction to the news that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has placed the governor on a watchlist. The governor will conclude his tenure on March 17, and it’s suspected that he may leave the country after then.
7. Zamfara APC: We have not received any petition from aggrieved members – Committee
The appeal committee constituted by the All Progressive Congress (APC) from the national headquarters of the party to look into complaints from aggrieved members of the party in Zamfara State has lamented the committee has not received any complaint from anybody.
Addressing newsmen at the state secretariat of the party, the secretary of the committee, Barrister Usman Mohammed Eleju said they have been in the state since last week, saying that nobody has come forward with any complaints.
8. EPL: You can do more with Man Utd than PSG – Michael tells Pochettino
Former Manchester United striker, Michael Owen has claimed that Paris Saint-Germain manager, Mauricio Pochettino can do more with the Red Devils squad than his current team.
Owen said this while speaking on reports linking Pochettino with a move to Manchester United.
9. Lekki massacre: EndSARS report lacks credibility – Islamic group
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has finally reacted to the leaked EndSARS report on the clash between Nigeria’s security agencies and protesters at Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020.
The Islamic group handed down a resounding verdict of rejection of the report, describing it as full of loopholes and lacking credibility.
MURIC’s verdict was pronounced in a statement on Thursday by its director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola.
10. UK to ban ads for cosmetic procedures for under-18s
Ads for cosmetic procedures designed to change a person’s physical appearance are to be banned from targeting young people under the age of 18 in the U.K. from May next year.
The UK Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) made the announcement on Thursday.
“The new rules mean companies will no longer be able to advertise procedures such as breast augmentation or reduction, abdominoplasty or tummy tucks, eyelid surgery and nose reshaping.
