1. NACCIMA seeks full implementation of executive order 005

The Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) has called for the full implementation of Executive Order 005 to address Nigeria’s rising unemployment figures extensively.

On Tuesday in Lagos, it made the call via a communique of its 4th quarter council meeting signed by NACCIMA Director-General, Amb. Ayoola Olukanni.

Executive order 005 for planning and executing projects, promoting Nigerian content in science, engineering, and technology is expected to promote Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).

It is hoped that the order would also increase the pool of skilled technical workers, which the private sector could tap into to improve productivity.

2. Sudan’s Hamdok says he returned to safeguard economic gains

Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said on Monday that maintaining the economic gains from the past two years was among the reasons he had decided to return to his post, under a deal with the military nearly a month after he was removed in a coup.

In an interview with Reuters at the Khartoum residence where he had been held under house arrest following the Oct. 25 military takeover, Hamdok said he believed a technocratic government he is expected to appoint would have a chance to improve living standards.

3. Former South Korean military dictator Chun Doo-hwan dies at 90

Former South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan, whose iron-fisted rule following a 1979 military coup sparked massive democracy protests, died on Tuesday at the age of 90, his former press aide said.

Chun had multiple myeloma, a blood cancer in remission, and his health had deteriorated recently, his former press secretary Min Chung-ki told reporters.

He passed away at his Seoul home early in the morning, and his body will be moved to a hospital for a funeral later in the day.

4. Fighting terrorism futile without addressing root causes – ECOWAS

The Vice President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ms Finda Koroma, says the only successful way to fight terrorism within the region is to attack its root causes.

On Monday, Koroma said this at the inauguration of the Early Warning Study on the Spillover of Violent Extremism to ECOWAS Coastal Member States in Abuja.

” The ECOWAS Commission understands that it would be illusionary to fight against terrorism without attacking its root causes, such as bad or in some cases, weak governance, poverty, youth unemployment and human rights abuses.

5. Child Trafficking: Police rescue two newborn babies in Ebonyi

The Police Command in Ebonyi, on Monday, rescued two newborn babies from suspected child traffickers.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Loveth Odah, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abakaliki that the babies were rescued by a team of local vigilantes and Ebubeagu Security Network.

She said that the suspects were intercepted on the boundary between Abi Local government area of Cross River and Abaomege axis in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi.

“They were intercepted during a search by the local vigilantes in the area who alerted the police,” the police spokesperson said.

6 . Babangida, Abubakar confident in army’s effort in tackling insecurity

Two former Heads of State, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and Gen. Abdulsami Abubakar, have expressed confidence in the Nigerian Army’s step in combating the nation’s insecurity.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, in a statement, said the former leaders stated this when the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya visited them separately on Monday in Minna.

Babangida said he was confident in the Nigerian Army’s ability to stem the current security challenges confronted across the country.

7. Yobe govt announces 10% deduction in workers’ salaries to boost education

Yobe State Government has said that 10 per cent of workers’ basic salary for November would be deducted as their contribution to the education recovery appeal fund.

The Commissioner of Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Mohammed Lamin, the Chairman Sub-committee for Yobe Education Recovery Appeal Fund, disclosed this on Monday in Damaturu while briefing newsmen.

He said the devastating effects of Boko Haram insurgency in the state had compelled the state to embark on fundraising for education recovery.

8. Yoruba group accuses PDP of the plot to undermine Amotekun operations

A Yoruba group has warned the Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, against propagating an agenda to disable the functions of the Southwest Security Network, also known as Amotekun.

The group, Yoruba Youth Indigenous Movement, YYIM, which alleged a move to scuttle the operations of Amotekun in the South-west, said the plot would be met with resistance.

According to the group, the PDP used a former governor to achieve its aim for political gains.

9. One corpse recovered as Dangote cement truck plunges into river

A truck said to belong to Dangote Cement Factory has fallen into Ososa river in Ogun State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said on Monday.

The Howo Sino truck, loaded with bags of cement, swerved into the river along the Sagamu-Benin highway when the driver lost control due to excessive speeding.

The FRSC said it could not ascertain those involved in the accident, adding that a crane was “contacted by the Dangote Cement representative to ensure timely recovery of the crashed vehicle”.

10. Bandits strike near Katsina town, kill 4, injure others

Barawa community, under Batagarawa Local Government Area in Katsina State, was thrown into commotion on Sunday night after bandits in large numbers attacked the community, killing four persons and several others injured.

A source said the hoodlums stormed the community, which is barely 10 kilometres from Katsina metropolis, around 9 pm, shooting sporadically into the air.

According to the source, “nobody was kidnapped during the attack, but three men and an elderly woman were killed in the process. They also looted several shops and houses of their valuables and took away their goats and sheep as well.”
