The National Institute for Transport Technology (NITT) Zaria, has concluded plans to unveil hybrid tricycles to strengthen road transportation within cities and towns in Nigeria.
Dr. Bayero Salih-Farah, Chief Executive Officer of the institute, disclosed this during an interaction with newsmen in Zaria on Wednesday.
He said the institute’s team of engineers is working on an NITT model of hybrid (electric) tricycle, which has reached an advanced stage.
“This, we hope to launch as soon as work is completed on it.
“NITT has deployed a team of committed engineers to work on the institute’s model of electric vehicle in liaison with industry captains and other relevant government institutions with the view of making this dream a reality, ” he said.
Also, Mr. Elkana Mbale, Director, Transport Technology Center of the institute said the hybrid tricycle would use both electric and petrol engines.
According to Mbale, tricycles are mostly common modes of road transportation within towns and cities, and hybrid tricycles would improve the road transport system.
Meanwhile, the institute has acquired an 84-hectare parcel of land from the Kaduna state government to establish a Jathropa farm for biofuel production.
According to Salih-Farah, additional 40 hectares of land was also acquired from Sabon Gari Local government area in Kaduna state to set up Drivers Development and Training Centre.
He added that the institute was on the verge of securing accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education to run National Diploma Programmes in Crane Operation, Welding and Fabrication, and Mechatronics. (NAN)
