In bid to secure the National Chairman position of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje has been intensified lobbying party stakeholders, a move that has left the Northwest region fuming.
The recent resignations of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, triggered demands from the North-Central zone for the region to retain the National Chairmanship position.
However, Ganduje, hailing from the Northwest zone, has been engaging with prominent party members in a bid to garner support for his ambition.
Notably, Ganduje has already garnered the backing of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), which has further fueled tensions within the party.
According to a source cited by The Punch, Ganduje recently met with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, in Abuja on Sunday, following a prior meeting with Senator Aliyu Wamakko, a former governor of Sokoto State, at his Asokoro residence in Abuja on Saturday.
However, the move has not been well-received in the North-Central zone, where APC chairpersons insist that the National Chairmanship position should remain in their region to uphold principles of fairness and equity.
They pointed out that during the party’s National Convention last year, the position was unanimously zoned to the North-Central.
John Mamman, the Nasarawa State Chairman of the APC, reiterated the zone’s stance, saying, “Now that the position is vacant and there won’t be another zoning but replacement, it is expected that we in the North-Central zone should retain the position for fairness and equity.”
