The Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), Northern Charter, has announced that it will shift its ongoing protests against bad governance to the local government areas of Kano State as part of a strategic adjustment.

At a press conference held in Kano on Tuesday, the movement explained that this decision was prompted by the extensive property damage that occurred during the initial phase of protests which began on August 1.

“Considering the severe destruction of properties that Kano has suffered since August 1, we consider it prudent to re-strategize and decentralize our peaceful protests so as to cope with the peculiarities of our environment,” said Comrade Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, the Chairman of the movement.

Daudu emphasized that the struggle for good governance is an ongoing effort that must address all levels of government—local, state, and federal.

The group also criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent nationwide broadcast, accusing him of blaming the organizers of the anti-hunger protests for the violence while failing to address the “thuggery, bloodletting and murderous conduct” by those causing chaos in his name, particularly in Kano where both public and private properties were looted, destroyed, and set ablaze.

“This havoc was not spontaneous. It was, in certain respects, targeted. How do we explain the looting and arson at NCC office, or the attack on the Kano State High Court?” the movement questioned.

The NPFM also called on Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to ease the 24-hour curfew currently imposed on the state to allow residents to return to their normal activities.

“We restate our commitment to continue the struggle against bad governance, extreme poverty, high cost of living, and grand corruption in Nigeria,” the group concluded.
