The Bauchi council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has decried the spate of kidnappings in the state, as it rounded-off its congress meeting in Bauchi on Saturday.

In a six-point communique read by Elizabeth Kah, the council urged the state government to redouble efforts in curbing the menace.

It urged security agencies to rise up to the challenges, while calling on other stakeholders to assist them with useful information, commending  the federal and state governments for their efforts at curtailing the security challenges facing the country.

The communique also commended the state government for pledging to reconstruct the state secretariat of the union, in addition to the continuous support it had been rendering journalists in the state.

Similarly, it applauded the state council for establishing the ethics and disciplinary committee to check abuse of the profession by some members, “as well as moving the union to a better level within just one year in office,” it said.

The communique further lauded the leadership of the union for the role it played when a member was brutalized by the members of the Rapid Response Squad of the state Police Command.

The meeting ended with an appeal to members, to always uphold professionalism in the discharge of their assignments as unruly behaviour would not be accepted.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the congress meeting was one of the scheduled activities of the Bauchi Council’s 2021 Press Week.
