Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ondo State Command, has trained no fewer than 80 senior officers on skill enhancement in the state.
Dr Hammed Abodunrin, NSCDC State Commandant, said this during a four-day workshop organised for NSCDC Field Commandants by the command in collaboration with Achievers University, Owo, Ondo State on Friday.
Abodunrin explained that the training, with the theme “Skill enhancement as a prerequisite for functional security management”, was part of Commandant-General Ahmed Audi’s vision and mission to train and retrain officers on how to secure their areas of responsibility.
The commandant recalled that the officers were last trained in 2015.
He said that the training was for the categories of Superintendent and Chief Superintendent of Corps in the command across the state.
“Our job is a living profession and the only way you can feed this kind of profession is by injecting it with more knowledge. If you are not inspired, you will expire; so, somebody who is not trained is an expired officer.
“You cannot be running a command in 2022 with the knowledge of 2015. It is not possible.
“That is why we are bringing in field officers, unit commanders, divisional officers and area commanders to come and upscale their knowledge,” Abodunrin said.
He said that the professors, who were experts in criminology and security, who studied in the school and outside the school, would train the officers.
He explained that the Nigerian Army, Police, Correctional Service as well as the Department of State Security were also partners with them and gave lectures.
The commandant said that the command was combining theory and practical to tackle insecurity in the country, saying the essence was to ensure that NSCDC had what it took to actually address security needs.
Abodunrin said that the command had introduced Ondo Security Awareness For Everybody, (Ondo SAFE).
He explained that the initiative was to ensure that every resident of the state was security conscious.
“We started with the university. In Achievers University, we will be training the university community on security awareness and personal defence skills as we have done in other universities in the state.
“We have been to secondary schools. We have trained close to 5,000 students and 500 teachers across the state.
“The children will be our ambassadors in their parents’ homes to teach them about security,” he said.
In his welcome address, Prof. Samuel Aje, Vice-Chancellor, Achievers University, applauded the NSCDC for the retreat.
He said he could see that security agents were working to find solutions to prevailing problems of the county.
Aje, therefore, called on officers and men of the NSCDC and other security outfits in Nigeria to take advantage of the array of programmes available in the university in the area of criminality and security studies, amongst others.
“With this training, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel and I can see the security team overcoming all the challenges. Nigerians should be expecting positive results very soon,” he said. (NAN)
