One person was said to have died, while many others were injured in a riot that broke out between suspected members of Yoruba agitators and policemen in the Ojota area of Lagos on Monday morning.

Trouble broke out when policemen stormed Freedom park, at Ojota to disperse suspected street urchins also known as ‘area boys’ who had converged in the area for a mega rally organized by members of the Yoruba Nation Agitators (YNA).

At the end of the violence, one male adult was killed while many others sustained different wounds as they scampered for safety.

The YNA group had scheduled the rally at Ojota to demand self-determination, Daily Trust reports.

A source said the group had converged, even though, they were not granted police approval for the rally.

Footages from netizens monitored on social media captured a security van set ablaze by the protesters as police operatives fired tear gas to repel the angry protesters.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the death of a yet-to-be-identified person while assuring that normalcy had been restored in the area.
