In a significant move, the leadership of organised labour has announced an indefinite nationwide strike set to commence on Monday. This decision is expected to have far-reaching implications across various sectors of the economy.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced a strike following a joint emergency meeting held in Abuja on Friday.

During the May Day celebration, labour issued an ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude negotiations on the new national minimum wage by May 31. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls this development.
TUC President Festus Osifo announced to reporters that the strike was deemed necessary due to the government’s refusal to raise the offered N60,000 wage during the meeting of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.
According to Osifo, the strike was deemed necessary as a result of the government’s refusal to backtrack on the increased electricity tariff.
A nationwide industrial action is set to begin, starting from Sunday midnight on June 2, 2024. The strike has been declared indefinite, according to the announcement.
“We are united on this and we believe that this is the way forward,” he said.
