Governor Nyesom Wike said on Saturday that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, leadership’s confidence vote in Sen Iyorcha Ayu to continue as National Chairman had not dampened his and his allies’ spirits, insisting that the right thing must be done.
Wike said at a reception in Port Harcourt for decampees from other political parties into the PDP in Rivers state that his camp will not fight and retreat on the battle fueled by differences over stakes sharing in the party ahead of the 2023 general election, which has apparently alienated the Rivers governor and allies.
“I was listening and watching,” he explained, “and they said there is one man they call Secondus.” They claimed he was dancing in celebration of the NEC’s vote of confidence in their candidate. He has forgotten his history.
“Ask him if the same NEC, through Aliyu Babangida, moved a vote of confidence, which was supported by the same person, Ndudi Elumelu.” What happened after they gave you (Secondus) a vote of confidence? You resigned from your position.
“We don’t fight and then retreat.” It’s not my concern if you have as many as 20 votes of confidence. My job is to make certain that the right thing is done, and the right thing must be done. Whether now or later.”
“I’m not going to play party with my people’s interests.” Rivers State comes first, before any other person or group. So that everyone can see what we’ve done. We have never abandoned governance until now.
“While many people are already rounding up and taking what they can get, we remain committed to commissioning and flagging off projects.” We will continue to serve you until May 29, when, by the grace of God, Siminialaye Fubara will be inaugurated as the next governor of Rivers.”
Wike boasted about Rivers PDP’s chances in the upcoming elections, saying, “If God gives you the ticket of PDP in this State, go home and sew your cloth for the inauguration day.” Because what will any Rivers man or woman say if they want to vote for anyone else in Rivers State?
“As a party, we have remained faithful to our constituents. As a party, we have stood up for our constituents. As a party, we have never tolerated intimidation from any source, and we are speaking in the best interests of Rivers State.
“Recall that before I arrived, one state held our property.” When I became governor, we reclaimed all of our property with the help and prayers of our people.”
