A delegation of prominent Nigerian Muslim clerics arrived Niger on Saturday 12th August 2023.

Notable figures in the delegation are Sheikh Bala Lau, Sheikh Kabiru Gombe and Dr Ibrahim Mansur Sokoto among others.

While the exact purpose of their visit remains Unclear, it is strongly believed to be connected to the recent coup and the looming military intervention by ECOWAS.

It will be recalled that the the 14th Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi was also in Niger where he engaged in discussions with the coup leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani.

Following his meeting, the Emir briefed president Bola Tinubu on the discussions he had with the General.

Numerous diplomatic engagements have taken place between the Junta and representatives from the United Nations, ECOWAS, AU, and the United States. Unfortunately, these interactions have failed to produce any significant outcomes.

Following the conclusion of a second Extraordinary Summit in Abuja on Thursday August 10 addressing the situation in Niger, ECOWAS issued a directive for the activation of its standby force, indicating readiness for a potential military intervention aimed at reinstating constitutional order in the country.

However stakeholders continue to urge for a solution that avoids resorting to military intervention, preferring diplomatic channels instead.
