A 53-year-old man, John Okeke, was on Friday arraigned before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, for allegedly defrauding a man of N300,000.

The police charged Okeke, whose address was not provided, with fraud and obtaining money under pretext.

The Police Prosecutor, Insp E. O. Adaraloye, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Sept. 8, at about 10.30 a.m. opposite Indomic, Oju-Ore, Ota.

Adaraloye alleged that the defendant collected N300,000 under pretext of selling food preserver to the complainant, Obinna Martins.

He said the defendant converted the money to personal use instead of fulfilling the agreement between them.

The prosecutor said the offences contravened Sections 419 and 516 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs A. O. Adeyemi, admitted the defendant to N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

Adeyemi ordered that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with evidence of tax payment to Ogun government.

She adjourned the case until Nov. 24 for further hearing.
