The Police Command in Bauchi on Sunday said it has arrested two suspects that specialized in snatching motorcycles from owners with dangerous weapons.
The police spokesperson, SP Ahmed Wakil, said in a statement that the suspects were arrested on July 27, in Bauchi Metropolis.
He said the suspects were arrested following a distress call received at at the command headquarters in Bauchi at about 21:00hrs
Wakil said the suspects were operating and had attacked one Kabiru Muhammadu of Magaji Quarters, Bauchi, and snatched his Bajaj Motorcycle using dangerous weapons.
“Command On 27/07/2023 at about 2100hrs, the command detectives acted on credible intelligence and arrested two suspected motorcycle snatchers who specialise in beating-up okada riders and carting away with their motorcycles.
“On 27/07/2023 at about 2030hrs one Mustapha Adam of Anguwan Mahaukata and Jafar Lawan of Gudun Hausawa area, Bauchi, disguised as passengers and boarded an okada man, one Kabiru Muhammadu of Magaji Quarters area of Bauchi.
“At the Central Market to old airport area on reaching Wikki oil axis, they brought out a trailer-wheel spanner and hit him on his head, which he sustained a serious injury on his head and fell unconscious,” the spokesman stated.
According to him, on receipt of the report, the command immediately drafted a team of detectives and swiftly rushed to the scene evacuating the victim to Specialist Hospital Bauchi for medical attention.
“Meanwhile, the detectives trailed the culprits and they were successfully apprehended before arriving at their safe haven within Bauchi Metropolis.”
He said preliminary Investigation revealed that the suspects are notorious and professional motorcycle snatchers within and outside of the state.
Wakil said during Interrogation, the suspects confessed to the allegation against them and sounded remorseful.
“Investigation is still on, after which the suspects would be profiled and charged to court for prosecution on the established offences accordingly.”
He said the police would not relent in their effort to tackle all forms of felonious activities carried out by “unscrupulous and deviant elements that are desperate to make a living at the expense of the hardworking and law-abiding citizens of the state”.
