 The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said one person has died in a road accident involving two commercial buses in Ukpo junction, along Onitsha- Nteje- Awka expressway.

This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by Mr Adeoye Irelewuyi, the Anambra sector commander of the FRSC.

Irelewuyi said that the incident occured at about 1:12 p. m. between a commercial Toyota Hiace bus with Reg. No: JRV 616 XA and another commercial Toyota Hiace bus with Veh Reg. No: JJJ 179 XS.

He said that the probable cause of the fatal crash was road obstruction and excessive speed.

According to him, an eye witness said that one of the tyres of the bus with registration number JRV 616 XA pulled out while in a motion which resulted in a head-on collision with the un coming bus.

“14 persons were involved in the crash comprising four male adults and six female adults, one male child and three female children.

“Eight persons, comprising three male adults, three female adults and three female children sustained varying degrees of injury and one male adult died,”Irelewuyi said.

He said that the victims were rushed to Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka where a medical doctor confirmed one dead on arrival before depositing him in their mortuary.

Irelewuyi said those injured were receiving treatment after receiving first aid from the nurse detailed at the FRSC help area, Nteje.

The sector commander condoled with the family of the deceased and  prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured persons.

He warned motorists to desist from excessive speed and wrongful overtaking especially this festive period that the roads were very busy. (NAN)
