The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that 49 people have lost their lives, and 226 communities have been devastated by floods and windstorms in 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) since January 2024.

This was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, who noted that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier warned of potential flooding in 14 LGAs across the state. Sadly, this prediction has materialized, causing widespread destruction.

Among the affected LGAs are Tudun Wada, Gwale, Wudil, Danbatta, Ajingi, Dala, Gwarzo, and Madobi, with other areas including Bichi, Kano Municipal, Karaye, Tarauni, Minjibir, Bebeji, and more.

According to Abdullahi-Kubarachi, “the floods destroyed 6,583 homes, affecting a total of 38,814 people.” He further added that “8,289 farmlands, covering 36,265 hectares, have been ruined, with 1,414 people displaced and 139 injured.”

SEMA has been quick to respond by visiting affected communities and distributing relief materials on behalf of the Kano State Government. “In collaboration with relevant stakeholders, SEMA has organized several workshops aimed at finding solutions to prevent future environmental hazards, especially flooding,” he stated.

He also praised Governor Abba Yusuf for his support in helping to ease the suffering of the victims.

Abdullahi-Kubarachi urged residents to avoid building on waterways and to ensure that drainages are cleared to prevent future flooding. He also called on wealthy individuals to support SEMAโ€™s relief efforts for the victims.

The Executive Secretary reaffirmed the agencyโ€™s commitment to protecting lives and property in Kano State.
