The Chief Whip of the Senate, Orji Uzor Kalu, says he will withdraw from the presidential race of the 10th National Assembly if the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu, tells him to step down.

Kalu stated this on Tuesday while briefing State House reporters after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari over his Senate presidency ambitions.

Informing the President of his intention to become the next Senate President, the former Abia State governor said the two of them simply shared laughter over the issue as Buhari issued no response, maintaining an ambiguous mood.

The lawmaker, however, stated that he has not gotten any assurance from anybody, but as a party man, he remains hopeful.

Although he maintained that he would be the solution to the search for the South-East Senate President, Kalu underscored that he can be stopped by those in the big league, even though he has declared that it is his turn.

During the closed-door meeting with the President, Senator Kalu stated that he suggested that the Board of Trustees of the party be resuscitated so the President, as Chairman, can remain part of the conscience of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawmaker further noted that this has become imperative so members can have someone to run to when problems arise, asserting that only God saved the party from protracted rancor that threatened to rip the party apart.

“It is just God that saved our party because the quarrel and rancor inside the party is so great.”

“The party should bring back our Board of Trustees or something that looks like it so that Mr. President will be Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the party so that every four or five months, he will come and see how the party is doing,” Kalu said.

“We cannot just leave the party empty-handed.” The president will still be part of the conscience of the party, so we will have somebody to run to when we have problems in the party.

“It is just God that saved our party; that is the truth, because the quarrel and rancor inside the party are so great.”

“We need a man like President Buhari to be around every three or four months; we’ll go and drag him from Daura, and he will settle party matters.”
