According to the Senate Adhoc Committee on Oil Theft, an investigation into the circumstances surrounding oil theft and illegal bunkering activities in the Niger Delta region has begun.

Bassey Akpan, Chairman of the Committee, revealed this while answering journalists’ questions at Port Harcourt International Airport earlier this week.

Akpan expressed concern about the massive theft of Nigerian crude oil.

He claimed that the country had lost enormous earnings and had failed to meet the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ quota.

“Our intention is to visit every oil terminal in the Niger Delta region to see things for ourselves, the cause of oil theft, the cause of oil losses,” he said.

“The National Assembly believes that the local refining capacity will never be guaranteed, sustained, or ensured as a result of all the bunkering issues.”

“We believe that the country is losing significant revenue and resources in other areas.” So we’re out here to do a serious job.”
