Vice President Kashim Shettimaโ€™s recent social media post recognizing Muhammadu Sanusi II as the 16th Emir of Kano has stirred varied reactions online.

In a post shared on his official Facebook and X accounts, Shettima referred to Sanusi as the 16th Emir of Kano while recounting his attendance at the wedding of Dr. Aishatu Kwankwaso, daughter of former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The vice president stated, “The wedding which took place at the palace of the 16th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II, was conducted by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zahraddeen.”

The post triggered discussions among social media users, who perceived it as an endorsement of Sanusiโ€™s claim to the throne despite the ongoing legal battle over the Kano emirate.

Kano has seen the emergence of two emirs: Sanusi and the current 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, with the legitimacy of the throne still a subject of court proceedings.

In response to the online feedback, the vice president later revised his post, editing the third paragraph to omit Sanusiโ€™s name. The updated version read, โ€œThe wedding which took place at the Kano Emirโ€™s palace was conducted by the Chief Imam of Kano, Prof. Sani Zahraddeen.โ€

Social media users quickly reacted to the initial post. Alhassan Ali Lawan expressed gratitude, commenting, “We are glad for honouring the invitation, Your Excellency! We are also happy for recognizing our Emir as the 16th Emir of Kano State. The presidential candidate (Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso PhD) is wishing you well and safe back home! Thanks once again!!!”

Najeeb Sule Alfindi also shared his thoughts, saying, โ€œThe best paragraph that impresses me is the 3rd paragraph, where you said which took place at the palace of the Emir of Kano, and then you mentioned who is the Emir Muhammad Sunusi II. Thank you, Sir.โ€

Another user, Musa Kabir, praised the vice presidentโ€™s remarks, noting, โ€œMasha Allah! Your Excellency, on behalf of the good people of Kano State, we really appreciated your attendance. I know you can unite the six geopolitical zones in this country. Secondly, I really appreciated your second statement that called the 16th Emir of Kano State. Malam Sunusi Lamido Sunusi is our choice, and I pray for you one day to be the driver of this nation.โ€
