Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged Nigerian students to embrace hard work and shun any act that can tarnish their names and the image of the country.

The EFCC Zonal Head, Ilorin office, Usman Muktar, stated this on Tuesday during an anti-corruption sensitisation lecture for students of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin.

Muktar, who spoke through the Head, Public Affairs Department of the zone, Babatunde Ayodele, urged students to imbibe the culture of excellence, as future leaders of the country, and shun all forms of criminality.

He said: “We are here today to convey a message to you on behalf of EFCC.

“As leaders of tomorrow, we believe that you have a crucial role to play in turning the fortunes of this country around and you have all it takes to take the country to the next level.

“It is lamentable that corruption has become endemic in our culture, and the rate at which students engage in it is alarming.

“Corruption is the reason the country is still under-developed. It is the cause of poor education system, decay in infrastructure, insecurity and other challenges bedeviling the country today,” Muktar said.

The EFCC chief, who decried the way students got involved in internet fraud and other forms of economic and financial crimes, expressed the commission’s commitment to bringing such criminals to book.

He called on the students to focus on their studies and desist from cybercrimes and other forms of criminality, saying, “our attitude is the sum of who we are.

“The youth of today are exposed to several vices that can ruin their lives permanently. No matter how alluring or fascinating the gains of corruption may be, the result is always regrettable and miserable.”

Muktar called on students to join EFCC in the fight against corruption, stressing, “It is important that we all unite against corruption, not just leaving it in the hands of EFCC alone”.

Earlier, Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Noah Yusuf, had encouraged students to take up the job of foot- soldiers and whistleblowers in the fight against corruption.

Yusuf, while describing the institution as one of the best citadels of learning in Nigeria, commended EFCC for the advocacy visit and hoped for more. (NAN)
