Kunun Aya is one of the homemade natural drinks produced from a filtrate of majorly fruits paste. This refreshing drink has a milky look and taste and it is non-alcoholic. It is one of the major Northern drinks taken at a higher rate during the month of Ramadan. 

The refreshing taste and the less stress required to produce this particular drink make it preferable to other Kunu drinks made by the people.

Ingredients needed:

  • Tiger nuts (Aya)
  • Coconut
  • Date palm (Dabino)
  • Sugar (Optional)
  • Ginger (Fresh or dried)
  • Milk (Optional)
  • Germinated rice(Optional)

What are the health benefits?

From the listed ingredients, it is seen that Kunun Aya is a combination of protein, minerals, carbohydrates, vegetables, vitamins (B, C, D and E) and water which are all among the essential classes of food required by the system.

What is more amazing is the lightness of this drink in your body. You don’t feel heavy or full even after taking much of it.

Kunu Aya contains various elements and nutrients like calcium, potassium and fibres.

It is essential for digestion and prevents constipation because of the lightness in the system.

This drink has a history of boosting libido and increase in sperm count for men.

A healthy research result on this nut drink shows that it has the ability to fight certain bacteria in the body system. Coupled with the good taste and thirst-quenching ability.

Does this drink have any side effects???

Although it should be an advantage as the only apparent effect is the risk of weight loss. However, for pregnant women, it is a severe disadvantage of this non-alcoholic drink.

The following are the outlined method of making Kunu Aya;

Step I:

  • Wash and soak your tiger nuts in a container to softness(separate the pebbles)
  • Wash your date palm, remove the nuts and soak in a different container
  • Leave for some hours or more

Note: You may soak overnight to get an easy and fluffy paste.

Step II: 

  • Grind your ginger separately and keep it in a bowl
  • Rinse the tiger nuts into your grinding container.
  • Rinse and add your date palm to (1) above.
  • Break and extract the edible part of the coconut, add to (1) above
  • Add your fresh ginger to taste

Step III:

  • Give it a smooth grind (a blender or grinding machine)
  • Add 3-4cups of cold water to the grinded paste (depends on the consistency)
  • Filter to liquid, separate the shaft
  • Add milk to flavour (optional)
  • Add sugar to taste (optional)

Your chilled Kunu Aya is ready to serve.
