Six family members, including a mother and her five children, have died after consuming a local delicacy in Karkari village, Gwarzo Local Government Area of Kano State.
The victims, identified as 35-year-old Alhaqatu Abdulkarim and her children, Usman (9 years), Fiddausi (11 years), Hafsa (7 years), Jamilu (4 years), and Bashari (19 years), were reportedly taken to Gwarzo General Hospital after they developed severe abdominal complications.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, all six individuals died within intervals while receiving treatment.

The tragedy unfolded on Tuesday, according to Yakubu Danazumi, the Ward Head of Karkari village, who confirmed the incident during a phone interview on Sunday. Danazumi provided a heartbreaking timeline of the events leading up to the deaths.
“The incident leading to the death of the six family members happened on Tuesday,” Danazumi recounted. “Two of them died on the same day, two others died the following day, and the mother passed away on Thursday. The last child succumbed to the complications on Friday.”
The family was laid to rest according to Islamic rites, and the village community is preparing to hold a seven-day prayer session for the deceased on the upcoming Tuesday. The incident has deeply shaken the Karkari village, with many struggling to come to terms with the loss of an entire household in such a short span of time.
The family had been coping with the loss of the father, who passed away seven months ago, leaving behind the mother, her five children, and a second wife with six children. The community now faces the grim reality of burying yet another set of loved ones, as the mother and her five children succumbed to what appears to have been food poisoning.
Details about the exact cause of the poisoning remain unclear, as authorities are yet to release an official report on the incident.
