In an exhilarating match, South Africa secured their first 2023 Women’s World Cup victory by defeating Italy 3-2, securing their spot in the next round alongside Nigeria’s Super Falcons.

The Super Falcons qualified earlier by drawing 0-0 with the Republic of Ireland, finishing second behind tournament co-hosts Australia.

The upcoming Quarter-final match between Super Falcons and England is set for Monday, August 7, at 8:30 a.m.

For South Africa, the reigning African women’s champions, their journey in Group H saw a defeat, a draw, and finally, a crucial win against Italy on Wednesday, August 2, earning them the second spot in the group, with Sweden leading by 5 points and Italy trailing by just one.

In today’s game between Italy and South Africa, Italy started strong with Arianna Caruso converting a penalty awarded due to Karabo Dhlamini’s foul on teenager Chiara Beccari.

However, South Africa leveled the score as Francesca Durante’s unfortunate no-look-back pass gifted a goal to Francesca Durante.

The South African ladies surged ahead when Kgatlana set up Hildah Magaia with a clever ball, allowing her to beat Durante and score. Although VAR reviewed Caruso’s equalizer from a corner, the goal was ultimately validated after a prolonged delay.

Thembi Kgatlana emerged as the hero, securing the game-winning goal in stoppage time following Caruso’s header that led to Italy’s comeback.

The final whistle was met with jubilation from the South African players, as they made history for their nation.

Thembi Kgatlana spoke about her emotional dedication to the team, having chosen to stay despite the loss of three family members in the past two weeks.

South Africa’s next challenge is the Quarter-final match against the table-topping Netherlands from Group E on Sunday, August 6, at 03:00.
