Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, will unveil the committees and their chairmen to execute the legislative agenda of the 10th Assembly on July 27. Once the standing committees are constituted, members will receive their official cars.

Lawmakers have been vigorously lobbying to chair what they deem as “juicy committees.” Some of the highly sought-after committees include Appropriation, Army, Defence, Navy, FCT, Finance, Public, Air Force, Police Affairs, and Niger Delta Development Commission, among others.

On June 15, shortly after assuming the role of speaker, Mr Abbas announced the formation of seven special committees.

However, some lawmakers who were already appointed to these committees are now lobbying for more desirable assignments.

During an interactive session with the House of Representatives press corps on July 12, Representative Khadijat Buka-Abba, head of the ad hoc committee on Media and Publicity, expressed her reluctance to continue as the chairman of that committee when the speaker reveals the standing committees.

Her decision may stem from her previous experience chairing the Media and Publicity committee in 2019.

According to an anonymous source, the speaker will officially announce the committee names and their chairmen on July 27.

In addition, lawmakers are preparing to receive their official cars, which will facilitate their legislative work and oversight functions.

The vehicles will primarily serve committee-related activities.
