The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Zone A has called on some Kano State government officials to stay away from interfering in the affairs of the National Association of Kano State Students (NAKSS).

Although, Ziya’u Sarki, the NANS Deputy Coordinator who made the call while briefing newsmen on Wednesday in Kano did not mention the officials.

He raised the alarm over what he called interference of some officials of the state government to the new leadership of the NAKSS.

Sarki alleged that they challenged the emergence of Yahaya Usman-Kabo, the new NAKSS President, who was voted in 2020, but inaugurated on April 10, 2021.

According to him, “the new President was legitimately voted by the majority of members of the union, having fulfilled all constitutional requirements, and sworn-in by the Kano state Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice.

“Any announcement or directive challenging the legitimacy of the emergence of the new President, is a nullity and can not be allowed to stand.

“Let alone by Nigerian students who have an unblemished record of resistance to dictatorial tendencies and undemocratic resolutions.

“Sequel to complaints lodged by students organisations and individuals, we are however disturbed and displeased as an organisation owing to the provocative and unwarranted attack on the just constituted leadership of NAKSS by some elements under Kano state government.

“Instructively, we wish to call the attention of those government officials and their cohorts to understand that leadership in students’ unions only comes from students themselves through elections, in line with the provisions of the NANS Charter of Demands and the Constitution of NAKSS respectively.

“So far, NANS have recognised the emergence of Usman-Kabo as the legitimate President of Kano state students, having fulfilled all constitutional requirements and voted by the majority of Kano students.” He said.

The Deputy Coordinator added that NANS is hereby dissociated itself with any person or group of persons working to destabilise the NAKSS movement, calling on anybody with genuine case to use appropriate channels to register their grievances.

He also condemned the alleged announcement to remove the new NAKSS President from office by an aide of the Kano state governor, noting that the call had negated the tenets and principles of democracy.

“We wish to call on those government officials to henceforth redirect their energy and focus on the assignment of their offices and not allow themselves or person to be seen as breeding disunity within the ranks of NAKSS.

“Henceforth, they are advised to stay clear of meddling in students affairs as they have both right to do so under any circumstance.

“We hereby call on all security agencies for quick intervention to save students movement as an independent organisation that is agitating for peace and progress of our dear state and nation in general,” he appealed

Sarki vowed to continue to monitor events in the NAKSS, threatening to take legal action on anybody fanning the embers of crises and disunity in the association.
