There is a lot of tension around the Obosi end of the Second Niger Bridge in Onitsha, Anambra State, because there have been a lot of gunshots along the road leading to the bridge.
The shootouts, which began around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, were between some men dressed in military uniforms and a group of boys suspected of being criminals.
On two motorcycles and one tricycle, the hoodlums invaded the road, linking the yet-to-be-commissioned Second Niger Bridge, where they engaged the men in military uniform, who also arrived with a Hilux van, in gun battle.
The hoodlums fled into the surrounding bushes, where they exchanged bullets with the operatives.
As a result of the situation, people in the area have remained indoors.
The shoot-outs were still going on at 11:40 a.m. when this report was filed.
The reason for the hoodlums’ invasion of the area has yet to be determined, but eyewitnesses in the area say they may have come to carry out an ulterior motive.
When contacted, Anambra State Police spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga stated that he was in the church and would return later after completing his investigation.
