President Bola Tinubu on Thursday announced new cost-cutting measures, limiting the number of vehicles allocated to Ministers, Ministers of State, and Heads of Federal Government Agencies to a maximum of three.

“No additional vehicles will be assigned to them for movement,” Tinubu confirmed in a statement titled, President Tinubu issues new directives on reduction in cost of governance, which he signed on Thursday.

The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who released the statement, highlighted the significance of the measure. “The cost-cutting measure was announced today in a statement signed by the President,” Onanuga stated.

This is part of a broader directive by Tinubu, which began in January 2024, aimed at curbing government expenses. In that earlier directive, Tinubu slashed his foreign trip entourage from 50 to 20 officials and limited local trips to 25 officials. The Vice President’s entourage was similarly reduced to five officials for foreign trips and 15 for local ones.

In the latest directive, Tinubu also instructed that ministers, ministers of state, and heads of agencies are permitted a maximum of five security personnel. “The security team will comprise four police officers and one Department of State Services officer. No additional security personnel will be assigned,” the statement read.

Furthermore, Tinubu tasked the National Security Adviser with engaging military, paramilitary, and security agencies to determine appropriate reductions in their vehicle use and security personnel deployment.

“All affected officials are expected to comply with these new measures immediately, underscoring the urgency and seriousness of these changes,” the statement added.
