President Bola Tinubu hosts a special meeting of the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Abuja.

Daily News 24 reports that the President calls for the meeting in his capacity as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, in response to the coup in Niger Republic, which has truncated the country’s constitutional political leadership.

President Tinubu had condemned the current political situation in the neighbouring country in a statement he personally signed on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, and promised that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything possible to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance takes firm root in the sub-region.

In separate phone calls with President Tinubu on Thursday evening, US Vice President Kamala Harris and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reaffirmed the US and UN support for ECOWAS and the Nigerian leader’s efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger.

Various Presidents from West African Countries attend the meeting.
