Subsidy: Labour Leaders Walk Out Of Aso Rock Meeting, Accuse FG Of Deceit

The organised labour, on Friday, walked out of a scheduled meeting of the Presidential Steering Committee on subsidy palliatives at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Joe Ajaero, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), had led his delegation to the Chief of Staff’s office, venue of the meeting, but were soon on their way out of the villa.

The Steering Committee had met with the government delegation on Wednesday where the two parties agreed to reconvene on Friday to get brief from the three subcommittees set up to look into various demands.

The committee was constituted by the government to come up with palliatives that would cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal on the workers.

Tinubu to split education, works, housing, other ministries

Tinubu

Following the submission of the first set of ministerial nominees to the Senate, indications have emerged that President Bola Tinubu will restructure some of the ministries of the Federal Government by merging some, creating new ones and scrapping others.

Saturday PUNCH investigation revealed that the decision to restructure the ministries was in line with the recommendations of the Stephen Oronsaye report on the restructuring of the civil service as this paper had earlier reported that Tinubu would implement some of the recommendations in the report.

According to findings, the Federal ministries of Education, Youths and Sports Development, Agricultural and Rural Development, Solid Minerals, Works and Housing, Power; Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development are some of those being considered for restructuring. The restructuring of some of the ministries will also give birth to new ministries.

COUP D’ ETAT: Tinubu Rallies ECOWAS As Gen Tchiani Emerges Niger Leader

Chairman of ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has begun moves to counter the coup in the Republic of Niger that has upended the constitutional political leadership in the West Africa country.

Accordingly, the Nigerian leader will host a special meeting of the regional leaders today in Abuja.

This is coming just as General Abdourahmane Tchiani, head of Niger’s presidential guard, yesterday declared himself head of a transitional government in the West African country.

Tchiani appointed himself the head of the new military government and head of state just two days after his unit overthrew democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.

But a statement by presidential spokesman, Dele Alake, recalled that President Tinubu, as chairman of ECOWAS, had on Wednesday condemned the current political situation in the neighbouring country and promised that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the sub-region.

Fuel Subsidy Removal: Palliatives can’t cure our pains — Nigerians cry out

CITIZENS, including lawyers, human rights activists, academics, and artisans havefaulted the palliative measures put in place by some state governments to bolster the consequence of the removal of fuel subsidy on the people, saying it was a wrong strategy.

Some governments announced payment of N10,000 monthly for public sector workers, some allowances for medical personnel and occasional distribution of food to the poor and most vulnerable households as well as free bus rides for students of tertiary institutions.

In their reactions, a number of the residents insisted that it was a rip-off while others said the Federal Government should have put in place a proper plan before getting rid of fuel subsidy.

Professor Ihechukwu Madubuike, two-time Minister of Education and Health, said that for any palliative option to be meaningful, it should not be selective but one that would impact everybody.

He argued that the effects of fuel subsidy removal “is on everybody” irrespective of one’s socio-economic status, hence, nobody should be discriminated against in government palliatives.

Kanu ends all sit-at-home, warns Ekpa

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Friday ordered that all Sit-At-Home, including the Monday Sit-At-Home and other proposed Sit-at-Home be ended.

In a Special Public Announcement, addressed to “The General Public and Media Institutions”, through his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor and titled, “Direct Order: Mazi Nnamdi Kanu hereby ends all Sit-At-Home including the Monday Sit-At-Home and an other proposed Sit-at-Home”, the order read:“This Public Announcement bears (as shall be reproduced below) the unedited, verbatim Instructions containing a Direct Order personally issued by MAZI NNAMDI KANU in his own handwriting on 24th July, 2023 through me to MAZI SIMON EKPA, instructing him to ‘desist from calling for any Sit-at-Home henceforth’ and ‘to make a public announcement to the effect that he (Mazi Simon Ekpa) is in receipt of a direct order from him (Mazi Nnamdi Kanu) to cancel any pending Sit-at-Home in place at the moment’ and also that he (Mazi Nnamdi KAnu) has, by the same order, ‘authorized me to issue a press statement if he (Mazi Simon Ekpa) fails to make this announcement on his platform’.

Two months after subsidy removal: Life has become miserable, Nigerians tell Tinubu

Tinubu

Exactly two months after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu removed subsidy on petrol and said the decision would free up money for education, regular power supply, transport infrastructure and healthcare, Nigerians have started lamenting that they are yet to feel any positive impact of the policy.

Among their complaints is that life has rather become more miserable for them.

They criticised the president for ‘foisting an anti-people economic policy’ on the country.

Tinubu had during his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square on Monday, May 29, after he was sworn in as Nigeria’s 16th president, stated that the 2023 budget made no provision for fuel subsidy, adding that subsidy payment was no longer justifiable.

He promised that his government would instead channel funds into infrastructure and other areas to strengthen the economy.
