Months After Court Judgement: Ex-Govs Move To Replace Ayu As Atiku Meets Allies In Abuja

As efforts to install a successor of the removed national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Iyorchia Ayu, gather momentum, some former governors within the party are pushing for one of them to take up the mantle of leadership of the party.

It was gathered that the ex-governors met with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in Abuja yesterday.

The meeting was held at the residence of a chieftain of the PDP, Chief Tom Ikimi, in Maitama, Abuja.

The former governors who attended the meeting were Babangida Aliyu (Niger State), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal (Sokoto) and Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano).

Also at the meeting with the presidential candidate of the party for the 2023 general elections were seven serving governors of the party.

Nationwide strike: Stock homes with food, medicines, others, Labour tells Nigerians

The Federal Government will on Monday meet with the representatives of the organised labour in an effort to prevent the nationwide strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress.

However, the NLC has advised citizens to stock their homes with food items, medicines and other essential things ahead of the commencement of its seven-day strike to protest the removal of fuel subsidies and the escalating cost of living in the country.

The warning, it noted, had become necessary because the strike would cripple the country as movement would be severely curtailed as commercial transport operators would withdraw their services, while markets, schools and healthcare facilities would be forced to shut down.

The Assistant General Secretary, NLC, Chris Onyeka, said in an interview with one of our correspondents that the citizens should also minimise their movements so as to avoid being stranded.

Soludo ends contract with Niger street road contractor, TEC

Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State, has terminated the contract with TEC Engineering Nig Ltd, the contractor handling the rehabilitation of Niger Street road project in Onitsha, the commercial city of the State.

The Governor terminated the 2.17km Niger street road Fegge with a 1.1km flood control channel contract when he paid an inspection visit to the project and discovered that the contractor was not delivering according to the timelines and agreement reached before the contract was awarded.

He accused the contractors of negligence and lack of capacity to deliver the job.

Stress In No Subsidy Era: Govs struggle to roll out palliatives, Labour beats war drum

The Governor gave assurance that another contractor will be engaged to execute the job and reiterated that street trading has been banned in the state, as new markets are being built where street traders can stay and trade.

The Governor also inspected Ose market, Bida road, Emodi street, Oduigbo-Ochanja Market, Fegge, Onitsha South Stadium, and creek road in Onitsha.

A few states have rolled out packages while others either indicated interest to do so or haven’t done so yet.

In states where governors pledged various palliatives for workers, the measures appear too meagre to address the crippling effects arising from the subsidy removal policy.

President Bola Tinubu had urged the National Economic Council, NEC, which includes state governors, to mobilise palliatives to assuage the sufferings of the people.

Ponmo: When health risk outweighs nutrients

In spite of repeated warnings by relevant agencies and health experts on the dangers of consuming Ponmo, a popular delicacy across the country, especially the South West, findings show that many Nigerians have continued to ignore the advisories.

Severally, the Federal Government, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and health experts, among others, have issued stern warnings on the risk of consuming the delicacy.
