#Subsidyprotests: Banks, offices shut amid rallies, labour demands N200,000 wage
Banks, offices and other businesses in many parts of the country were shut on Wednesday following a rally by organised labour in protest against the failure of the Federal Government to provide palliatives to cushion the pains of fuel subsidy removal.
Several economic and commercial business premises were shut down in parts of the Federal Capital Territory and Abakaliki and other urban areas while many travellers were also stranded.
The organised labour was insisting on N200,000 minimum wage for workers and other palliatives for Nigerians as a condition to call off their protests.
After meeting with Tinubu, Labour calls off protests
After the leadership of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) led by its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, and that of Trade Union Congress, Comrade Festus Usifo met with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday at the presidential villa, Abuja, workers have called of the nationwide protest which they embarked upon on Wednesday.
According to a statement released last night by Dele Alake for the Presidency, the action was consequent upon the fruitful and frank discussion with President and their confidence in his ability to encourage open and honest consideration of all the issues put forward by the Labour Movement, the Labour Leaders resolved to stop further protest.
The statement added: “They opted for further constructive engagement with the government to resolve all outstanding issues as they affect the working people and Nigerians in general.
Labour protests hardship as Tinubu wades in
President Bola Tinubu yesterday met with the leadership of the two labour centres, the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, with a firm commitment to accede to some of their demands.
He immediately promised to constitute a new presidential committee on palliatives, as the labour leaders complained about the existing committee, led by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, which they described as an aberration.
He also acceded to labour’s demand for wage award, since negotiation of a new minimum wage would not come on till next year, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Cabinet size nears 70 as Tinubu ignores calls for lean govt
Despite persistent calls for a drastic reduction in the cost of governance amid dwindling revenue and burgeoning debt profile, President Bola Tinubu yesterday forwarded a fresh list of 19 ministerial nominees to the Senate for confirmation, taking the number of nominees to an unprecedented 47.
This is in addition to the earlier list of 20 Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), Special Assistants (SAs) and Personal Assistants (PAs) appointed by the President.
Recall that The Guardian had exclusively reported three weeks ago that barring last minute change, the cabinet will be as bloated as that of former President Muhammadu Buhari, but with major realignments in portfolios.
Hardship: Tinubu Wades In As Protests Rock States, Abuja
In the midst of the ongoing protests sparked by the removal of petrol subsidy, President Bola Tinubu has met with leaders of the Organised Labour towards resolving their grievances. The meeting, held at the State House in Abuja yesterday, was aimed at addressing the concerns and economic difficulties arising from the subsidy removal.
The national president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, in a chat with State House correspondents expressed satisfaction at the discussions with the president.
He, however, said there was no definitive assurance regarding the cancellation or continuation of the nationwide protests against the economic challenges arising from the petrol subsidy removal.“We met with him. The issues we discussed are the same issues that led to the protest today.
He has expressed his position, made some commitment, which were taken side-by-side with what the Senate said, and we’re taking it back to the office with our colleagues to review it and release a document on our next line of action. And by tomorrow, the NLC will equally have their NEC meeting, to look at the bigger picture,” he said.
