Bill to increase corps members’ allowance suffers setback
The members of the House of Representatives have failed to reach agreement on a bill that seeks to increase the transportation and accommodation allowances of members.
The bill, sponsored by Eta Ebora, was stepped down by the lawmakers during plenary on Tuesday after a long debate.
The bill seeks to increase the N150 transportation allowance to N20,000 and N200 accommodation allowance to N15,000.
According to the existing Act, places of primary assignment are mandated by the law to pay corps members N150 and N200 for transportation and accommodation, respectively.
Rolland Igbakpa, a member from Delta State, who led the debate on the bill, stated that the bill was drafted to bring things to present realities.
Keyamo drags Atiku to court
An order to compel the arrest and prosecution of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar has been sought by the Director of Public Affairs of the Presidential Campaign Council, (PCC), of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Festus Keyamo.
Keyamo approached the Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday following a 72-hour ultimatum he gave over a fraud allegation against Atiku by one of his former aides, Michael Achimugu.
PDP suspends Chimaroke Nnamani, Chris Ogbu, Ayeni Funso, others
The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has suspended Senator Chimaroke Nnamani (Enugu State) and Chief Chris Ogbu (Imo State) with immediate effect
This is contained in a statement by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of the party.
He said the decision to suspend the duo was taken after a very extensive review and consideration of the affairs of the Party in the country, pursuant to the provisions of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).
Akpabio wins APC senatorial ticket in Supreme Court
The Supreme Court, on Friday, affirmed the former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District election billed for February 25.
The apex court, in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel of Justices, upheld an appeal Akpabio filed to challenge the Court of Appeal judgement that nullified his candidacy.
In the lead judgement that was read by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, the apex court, held that the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to meddle in the issue of nomination of candidate for an election, which it said was within the purview of an internal affair of a political party.
Buhari receives new Guards Brigade commander
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday received the new Brigade of Guards Commander, Brigadier General AM Umar.
Umar takes over from Brigadier General Mohammed Usman who was transferred a fortnight ago.
The Nigerian Army on January 7 redeployed senior officers for “administrative and operational efficiency”.
The Presidential Guards Brigade is an elite Army unit responsible for protecting the President.
The members guard the residence of the President, his guests and perform ceremonial duties.
Some soldiers attached to the group were on July 24 ambushed along the Kubwa-Bwari road in Abuja.
Their intervention foiled the attempt by terrorists to invade the Nigerian Law School and Veritas University, both in Bwari.
