In a devastating incident on Wednesday night, the Hwrra community in the Kwall district of Irigwe Chiefdom, Bassa local government area, Plateau State, witnessed a tragic attack that resulted in the loss of five lives and the destruction of three houses.

The assault occurred around 10 p.m., when the residents had retired for the night. According to Sam Jugo, the National Publicity Secretary of the Irigwe Development Association (IDA), the perpetrators are suspected to be Fulani herders.

Jugo confirmed the fatalities, identifying the victims as Mrs. Jummai Matthew, 67; Martha Danladi, 13; Meshack Matthew, 18; Bari John, 30; and Robert Sunday, 7. Additionally, Maryamu Sunday sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical care at an undisclosed facility.

“This incident is heartbreaking, wicked, condemnable, and unprovoked,” Jugo stated. “It comes at a time when all well-meaning Rigwe natives are striving tirelessly to ensure peace in our home and surroundings.”

He extended condolences from the Irigwe Development Association to the families of the victims and the entire Rigwe community, both local and abroad. Jugo also expressed hope that security agencies will take appropriate action to address the situation.

The attack has left the Hwrra community in shock and mourning. The loss of lives and property has deeply affected the residents, who are calling for increased security measures to prevent further incidents. Local leaders and community members are urging the government to intervene and provide adequate protection for vulnerable communities in Plateau State.

In response to the attack, the Irigwe Development Association has called on the security agencies to intensify their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure justice for the victims. The association also emphasized the need for continuous dialogue and collaboration between different ethnic groups in Plateau State to foster peace and harmony.
