According to the Rio Grande do Sul state security secretariat, the aircraft struck the chimney of a building, hit the second floor of a house, and finally crashed into a furniture store. An inn was also damaged in the crash.
“There are nine deaths confirmed by the civil defense, and there are no survivors of the plane,” Cleber dos Santos Lima, Director of the Interior Police Department of the state civil police, told AFP.
Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact number of passengers and crew on board the Piper Cheyenne 400 turboprop but earlier estimated around ten people might have been aboard.
The crash resulted in a fire, and at least 15 people were taken to the hospital, mostly for smoke inhalation.
The plane had departed from Canela, another popular tourist destination in Rio Grande do Sul, before the tragic incident.
Gramado, known for its vibrant Christmas celebrations, attracts thousands of tourists annually, making the crash especially impactful during the festive season.
