United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Collaboration with the Media Awareness and Information for all Network (MAIN) organises a two-day training for journalists in Kano state.

The aim of the training is to build on the sustainable development goals and developing a network of sustainable development for journalists.

The training which is said to hold in six different states, Maiduguri, Kano, Abuja, Lagos, Oyo and Enugu.

Kano was chosen to represent the Northwest.

The training welcomed prominent personalities such as Prof. Umar Pate, the vice chancellor of Kashere University Gombe, Prof. Lai Oso from the University of Lagos, Dr. Jide Jimoh an Associate Prof, School of Communications LASU, Dr. Oluseyi Soremekum, Dr Ruqayyah Aliyu, a lecturer in Bayero University Kano, Dr. Zakkariya Yau Muhammad, Lawal Aliyu Dawakin Kudu among others.

Dr. Oluseyi the moderator of the programme explained sustainable development as the development that meets the need of this generation without compromising the future generations which basically means “leave no one behind”

Dr. Zakkariya Yau Muhammad from National SDGS office Abuja discussed on the 2030 agenda and the 17 SDGs goals.

“SDGs has 17 goals, 169 targets, 230 indicators that help to measure the targets where the targets measures goals.”

He explained that there are 17 sustainable development goals, it is the improved version of the MDGs (Millennium Development Goals) in 2015.

Professor Umaru Pate, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University Kashere, Gombe advised that the work is not for one person, “media owners should support SDGs without looking at what they would get.”

Professor Pate stressed that Journalism safety, funding, credibility and content is essential to credibility reporting.

Dr. Rukayya, a lecturer at Bayero University Kano looked into the dimensions of SDGs which are the economic, social and environmental issues bedevilling Kano state.

She advised journalists to look into these issues and make valid report that will sustain the economic challenges of the country.

Dr. Jide Jimoh lastly called on journalist to look beyond the conventional reporting and report indepth/investigative stories.
