In a thrilling round of 16 encounter at the 2023 Women’s World Cup hosted by Australia and New Zealand, England’s Lionesses secured a hard-fought victory against the Super Falcons of Nigeria.

The closely contested match ended in a goalless draw after extra time, leading to a dramatic penalty shootout.

Both teams displayed tremendous determination from the start, vying for a spot in the quarter-finals.

The first half concluded with no goals despite a contentious penalty decision. In the 31st minute, England’s Rachel Daly went down in the box following a challenge from Rasheedat Ajibade.

Initially awarded a penalty, the decision was reversed after a VAR review deemed Ajibade’s challenge legal.

The intensity heightened in the second half, with both sides pushing for a breakthrough while remaining cautious in defense.

England’s Lauren James received a red card in the 86th minute, leaving her team with ten players on the field.

The match extended into extra time, and the Super Falcons had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the first half of the added period. However, Michelle Alozie missed a chance to put Nigeria ahead.

After an enthralling 120 minutes of football, the game was ultimately decided by penalties.

Despite being down to ten players, England’s Lionesses held their nerve and emerged victorious, defeating the Super Falcons 4-2 in the shootout.

The Lionesses’ resilience and penalty prowess secured their place in the tournament’s quarter-finals, while the Super Falcons bowed out after a valiant effort.
