Stakeholders have cautioned farmers in Kano, against early irrigation farming, to make up for the shortage of rain witnessed during the 2021 rainy season so as to avoid hunger.
The stakeholders gave the warning at an event in Kano on Saturday, while conducting an awareness to commemorate 2021 World Food Day.
Mr Abubakar Usman, Chairman of Silvex International, an agro allied company, said that the global warming had already impacted negatively on farming.

Usman highlighted the need for social responsibility, to reduce the effects of global warming on the environment, saying that everyone has a role to play.
He called for the agricultural sector to be revamped so as avoid food shortages and make up for the short rain, which gave an indication that there might be food shortage.
Usman tasked farmers on the use of improved seedlings, to modify their old methods of farming, in order to boost food production.
“There is a great need to synergize and collaborate, to step up and imbibe new ideas in agriculture in Northern Nigeria”.
He explained that his company had worked with farmer groups in many parts of the country, and had successfully shared its technical expertise.
Usman, however, called on non-governmental bodies to advocate on the individual and corporate roles to be played, to mitigate the effects of global warming.
A lecturer at the Department of Dryland Agriculture, Prof. Murtala Badamasi, tasked farmers on synergizing with research bodies to understand new farming practices.
He said: “working close to research bodies will enable you to obtain best practices and improve your skills in new farming techniques.”
The Don further advocated for diversification of ideas to explore more opportunities in agricultural production.
Silvex International Ltd., an agribusiness, mining and logistics company, conducted a community sensitization in commemoration of 2021 World Food Day, during which it distributed over a 100 bags of rice to Yanoko community in Tofa local Government area of Kano to mark the day.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Food Day is an International day marked on Oct. 16 of every year to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945.
The 2021 Theme is “Our actions are our future. Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better Life”. (NAN)
