Yoda Box (short for Yoda Box Educational Resources), a Kano-based startup, launched its educational app, the Yoda Box Player. The Yoda Box Player is designed to give children in primary school access to over 650 high-quality high definition explainer videos on several topics covering Science, Social Studies, Phonics, Grammar and Composition. The app is specially designed to make learning at home comfortable and easy, catering for different types of learners that learn at different learning paces.

Furthermore, the app can play videos without the Internet, saving parents substantial data costs. The Yoda Box Player is a great product that seeks to make high-quality education accessible for every child in Nigeria.

The Yoda Box Player is designed to work for everyone, whether a parent, teacher, school owner, NGO or the government; Yoda Box has designed bespoke solutions tailored to everyone. For parents, they will not only gain access to the library of our excellent video content, but they also get a free online interactive evaluation to determine the preferred learning style of their child, plus a call from our experienced teachers to advise them on the best strategy for running a home learning programme that is the best for their child. For schools, we train the teachers on how to undertake the learning preference evaluations and strategies to implement in the classroom to ensure no one is left behind. For the government and NGOs, we have arrangements to offer lifetime subscriptions and teacher training at discounted rates. Finally, we strongly believe in building a community that fosters the exchange of ideas, collaboration and promotion of innovation and lifelong learning; that is why all our customers, including the children, teachers, parents and schools owners, are automatically added to our YBX Tribe community, where we run regular events on many subjects like painting, plays, astronomy and robotics.

At Yoda Box, our mission is to combine technology and local resources to create solutions that remove barriers to accessing quality knowledge in Nigeria. The “old-fashioned” pencil-and-paper methods of learning are still much needed in the classroom, but technology introduces lots of great tools to help students learn more efficiently and have fun while doing it. Our vision is to create and promote a learning system that is inclusive, equitable and relevant to all children and to tackle educational challenges. A system capable of empowering children with the knowledge, skills, and values to live in dignity and build their lives to become people who contribute to their societies. Our goal is not to make technology replace real teachers or the classroom style of learning but to use technology that can enhance the learning experience, not just for kids who love to learn or those who struggle to keep up but for teachers and parents as well.

For the team at Yoda Box, we did not just want to create apps that are nice and good but rather build great apps that solve the problem of our customers very well. That is why the design and development of the Yoda Box took several years and went through several iterations through working with over 1000 parents, 20 school owners, three public schools, 50 teachers and 5 NGOs. As a result, we are happy to say that the Yoda Box Player is built by the community. Furthermore, one of our core values involves putting Nigerian talent first, and that is why with pride, we are happy to say that everything about the Yoda Box Player was built by Nigerian talent from Kano and Kaduna. This includes software developers, designers, scriptwriters, production crew, copywriters, actors and many more. This is a clear testament to the Yoda Box Mantra, that “different is good and everyone has greatness in them”.

The founders of Yoda Box are Anas Yazid, a tech entrepreneur; Bilkisu Salem, an Educationist and Abdulkadir Nuhu, a filmmaker. What we all have in common is our obsession with creating something extraordinary and different. We believe the young generation, especially in the North, has a lot of talent and greatness locked in them, but we all have to learn to do things the right way. We seek to inspire these youth by leading the way and building a company that creates globally competitive products.
