Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has initiated the construction of an intra-city rail network in Maiduguri, the first of its kind in Nigeriaโs northern region.
The project aims to connect key locations in the city, including markets, schools, and public spaces, fostering economic growth and easing the movement of people and goods.

The first phase of the rail system will feature 12 terminals across strategic areas of Maiduguri. During a site inspection with Eighteenth Engineering Company (EEC), the implementation partner, Borno Stateโs Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, highlighted the ongoing feasibility studies and environmental risk assessments. โWe are committed to ensuring the project meets global standards while addressing local needs,โ he said.
The rail network is expected to be an energy-efficient and eco-friendly transportation alternative, complementing other infrastructure projects such as the expansion of Maiduguri’s 113-kilometre ring roads.
Governor Zulumโs administration has also introduced electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates to mitigate the impact of rising transportation costs following fuel subsidy removal.
