Kano state Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has described the fight against plastic pollution as the fight for all in order to ensure a healthy environment free of plastic waste.

The Governor stated this while delivering his address at the premises of Yusuf Maitama Sule University as part of the commemorations of word Environment day that is set aside by the United Nations, with a view to safeguarding humanity annually and is celebrated worldwide with this year’s theme being “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Governor Abba recalled with nostalgia how Kano used to be a land with natural beauty but the effect of indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste is posing a threat to the environmental well-being of the city.

According to the Governor ” Kano is blessed with natural beauty, however, like many places around the world we are grappling with adverse effects of plastic pollution” lamented the Governor.

Engineer Abba proffered solutions to the menace said ” we must create awareness about the detrimental impacts of plastic pollution on our environment as well as responsive waste management.

Education is the key to changing behaviours and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship through community engagements, school programs and public campaigns. We can empower our citizens with the knowledge to make informed choices and take action against plastic pollution.” he stated.

Engineer Abba added that to fight plastic pollution in Kano, people need to prioritize the reduction of single-use of plastic and businesses, individuals and government institutions to adopt sustainable alternatives such as; re-use bags, bottles and packaging by promoting and supporting local initiatives that provide an eco-friendly alternative.

At the end of the occasion, the Governor with the support of his deputy and other top government functionaries planted trees at the venue of the event. He later launched “Keep Kano Clean ” campaign at Dandago primary school.
